Drams of the Day: Benriach non-peated and peated.

Sorry for the lack of postings recently we have just replaced the works computer so I have been rather distracted with swapping files and generally taking the opportunity of a good tidy up of all the files that had been accumulated over the years and getting rid of the junk, it has been as bad as a house move but without the physical work.

So as to make up I have highlighted two different malts from the same distillery;

The Benriach 12 year old and the Benriach peated Curiositas 10 year old.

As a peated whisky has a stronger taste profile I would always taste this second.

BenRiach Single Malt Scotch Whisky 12 year old 40% 70cl Tasting Notes:-

The colour has mid amber hints of gold.

On the Nose there is honey, vanilla, floral, fruity and well balanced wood overtones.
The palate is rounded medium to full bodied, with rich honey, vanilla with hints of cream, spice and chocolate.

When this whisky was released it was awarded the Silver Medal, International Wine & Spirits Competition 2006 and the Bronze Medal, International Spirits Challenge 2005.

Recently this includes the Silver Outstanding Medal International Wine & Spirits Competition 2012

International Wine & Spirits Competition Silver Medal 2009 and 2008
International Spirits Challenge Silver Medal 2009

Benriach peated Curiositas 10 year old Single Malt Scotch Whisky 40% 70cl Tasting Notes:-

This rare peated Single Malt from the Heartland of Speyside has wonderful overtones of peat reek, combined cleverly with a background of fruity, floral heathery notes and an appealing present.

Traditionalists believe that peated malts achieve optimum balance of peat-bittersweet and oak fusion after 10 years of maturation.
In fact peated BenRiach is a return of the original Speyside character and flavour of malts typical of the nineteenth century.

The colour is a rich amber.

On the nose there is an explosion of aromatic peat reek, with fragrant hints of honey, fruit and mellow oak.

The palate enjoys an avalanche of peat, followed by an extravagant and complex mix of fruit, heather, nuts, oak wood and spices.

When this whisky was released it was awarded Silver Medal, International Wine & Spirits Competition 2006 and the Silver Medal, International Spirits Challenge 2005.
