Dram of the Day ABERFELDY 16 YEAR OLD SINGLE MALT SCOTCH WHISKY


Taken from a Single Cask Aged 16 years of only 350 bottles charged from a refill Hogshead Ref :DL 6844

Distilled in June 1994 and bottled December 2010 at 50% by Douglas Laing under their Old Malt Cask Label

The nose is softly perfumed with fruit, honey and dry grist

On the taste buds there is a silky smooth introduction to vanilla, with a background of malt and spice.

The finish has a pleasant Butterscotch with spices, sugar and mild oak

An ideal after dinner whisky to savour

Nose; Sugary- Vanilla'd - Distinctly fruity and softly malted.

Palate; Still fruity - with more (crunched) sugar + spices/sweet barley.

Finish; Warmly - now dryly spiced + a hint of liquorice + honey (F)

Royal Lochnagar 14 year old Old Malt Cask Scotch Whisky 50%

The first licensed Lochnagar distillery was built on the north side of the river in 1826 by a former illicit distiller However the distillery was burned down by fellow smugglers who were happy at one of their kind ‘going legit’. The distillery was rebuilt by John Begg?

Single Cask Bottled at 50% by Douglas Laing & Co under the Old Malt Cask Label

Distilled April 1997 and bottled in August  2011.

One bottle of only 460  in total charged from one refil Butt Ref: DL 7595.

Nose; Clean & Fresh -Herbal & Fruity + Fresh home baked style.

Palate; Fruitily sweet - Warm & spicy peaches in syrup + Vanilla & Toffee.

Finish;  Long, still fruity & spiced with more herbal characteristics (J)

Tamdhu Single Malt Scotch Whisky Tasting Note :- Initially dry on the nose, it then warms to autumnal fruits and maraschino cherries. Honey hits the palate sweetly with juicy barley backing it up - then its finish is softly ( cough drop style ) spiced - smoked - and barley sugared. (F)

Un Chilled filtered No Colouring taken from one refill Hogshead DMG Ref 6919

Tasting Notes:
Opens with a fresh haylike and fruity (peaches) character on the nose and develops to a gree malt quality

The palate is sweet and carries a strawberry jam, macerated fruit and an elderflower style.

The finish is short but sweet and remains pleasingly fresh & light (F)

Cask Strenght at 58.1% alc vol

From Sherry cask no 7154 one of 272 bottles

Nose: Like a fruit basket in style + Spice & lightly fired pastry.

Palate: more (lightly smoked) spice + sugar steeped soft red fruit.


Finish: Interesting barley sugar precedes a dry malty gristiness (F).

Distilled in Spring 2001 and bottled Summer 2011 from one Refill Hogshead DMG Ref : 7645

Tasting notes...
On the nose detect an early strawberry jam character - plus sweet spices and a dry barley gristiness.
Initially toasted - now honeyed - on the palate - it warms to a real vanilla fudge quality.
It then heads to a long spiced finish - with a liquorice tail. (F)

From one Bourbon Barrel Ref DMG4822

tasting notes;

Gristy, malty, soft and dry on the nose.

Move on to a sweet palate - at odds with the nose - carrying fresh fruit (pears), and candyfloss.

Its finish is still sweet, now spiced and carries a tail of light woodland smoke (F).

From one sherry butt DMG Ref: 7507

Craigallachie Single Malt Scotch Whisky Tasting Note;

On the nose it is spiced and raisiny - with an interesting richness akin to freshpeaches in a wood carry box.

Paletewise it is full and sweetly barley'd - peppery - with more (now macerated) soft dark fruit very much evident.

All this leads to a considerably drier finish with hints oftobacco, ginger and nutmeg.

Glen Ord Single Malt Scotch Whisky Tasting Notes..

Very clean - fresh and gristy on the nose - with a sugary late twist . On the palate detect that same crunched sugar quality - plus light spices - barley and a hint of citrus. That is well replicated on the finish which may now be a shade creamier. (F)

Tasting notes...
Opens fresh and fruity on the nose, it runs to a sweet vanilla style with a candy floss character.
the palate is sweet and spicy and carries a tablet, American cream soda quality, maybe even a lightly smoked character, before it runs drier.
The finish is long, reminiscent of a coffee liqueur filled dark Belgian
chocolate. (J)

Un-chill filtered no colouring added a single cask bottling from one refill Hogshead DMG ref 6922
Tasting notes :-
Honeyed - perfumed - and attractively barley sweet on the nose... move onto a big round palate with more (runny) honey - dark sugar tones and Malt.

The finish is then warmingly spiced - still remarkably sweet - with that same round malty quality apparent. (F)

tasting note...

This cask refers to a refill butt HH5557.
Discover vanilla tablet with a light smoky character on the nose.

The palate opens oily, with Chinese spices, then a sweet and nutty style develops to caramelised fruit and butter.

The finish is long for a grain whisky with soft sweet spices and orange zest.

Cambus Single Grain Scotch Whisky 45.9% 70cl

from the Cambus distillery.

Vintage 1965 aged 45 years

Taken from a single cask bottled by The Clan Denny.

Bottled at natural cask strength.

This cask reference HH5638 refers to a refill bourbon barrel.

Opens with a spicy, toffee'd fruit character on the nose reminiscent of caramelised bananas and melted chocolate.

The palate is mellifluous and smooth  carrying a sweet & spicy quality . Christmas pudding with butterscotch sauce.

The finish remains pleasantly sweet throughout, still spicy, plus a delicate orange tang (J)

Jura Limited Edition 20 year old 51.2% Douglas Laing Old Malt Cask

Jura Single Malt  Scotch Whisky from the Isle of Mull.
To celebrate the establishment of the Jura Distillery in 1810
Douglas Laing  have chosen to release a Rare Single Cask of Jura Single Malt Scotch Whisky 
Distilled at the Isle of Jura Distillery.
They  would have liked to offer a 200 year old distillation - alas - that is not possible .
However this example of a 20 year old Jura does great service in displaying the qualities of the distiller.
