Friday, 2 March 2012
Dram of the Day: ARDBEG ALLIGATOR SCOTCH WHISKY 51.2% RARE LIMITED RELEASE
Monday, 4 January 2010
Port Charlotte PC6 Cuairt-Beatha 61.6% Alc.Vol.
Heavily peated and unmistakably Islay, this full strength bottling of 18,000 bottles is the second distillery bottling release of this progresive Single Malt.
Tasting notes :-
Colour; Sorrel chestnut/polished hazel.
Body; The ultimate Islay six-pack. It's a war of the elements: Gaelic skills, Atlantic tempests, ancient oak, smouldering peat all detonate from the glass in a thunderstorm of the Hebridean spirit unrestrained by age.
Nose; Opens beautifully, balanced on malt, peat and young spirit. The youth and strength of the spirit infusing the aromas of the green apple, mild mint, clove, bayleaf and forest greenwood. Given a dash of water and time little notes of Meadowsweet, Iris and Honeysuckle put their head above the parapet but don't linger too long as the next wave of Bracken and smoke with a slipstream of vanilla is about to overload the olfactory senses. The Madeira cask influence lies deep in the glass and brings the rich notes of syrupy dates and raisins which hold up well to the onslaught.
Palate; Absolute Rock 'n' Roll Islay. The heat of 61.6% plus 40ppm peat - and it's still only six years old - together develop into a unique palate experience.
If you love peated malt this kid has the 'WOW' factor. It's got an effervescece of spindrift and smoke, sweet citrus - the texture of the spirit is awesome due to trickle distillation. It's the integration of all the characters of the Island - particularly the guys who made it - that gives the spirit a 100% Islay DNA. This is a spirit that challenges, it exhilarates and it delivers - BIG TIME !

Bowmore 16 year old Single Malt Whisky

The judging panel of Dutch whisky experts carefully selected six from a blind tasting, before 2,900 consumers voted online to decide the outright winner.
Initially matured in bourbon and then transferred into Bordeaux wine casks, Bowmore 16-year-old’s unique flavours impressed the judging panel and won the overall consumer vote.
Bowmore is a single malt whisky of a truly rugged character which has matured in Bowmore’s unique cellars, beaten by the wild Atlantic winds and soaked in sea spray from Loch Indaal’s untamed waves.
It is the original whisky from Islay’s oldest distillery established in 1779, where each finished expression is balanced by nature.
For six years the spirit was infused with light vanilla notes from the Bourbon barrels. In 1998, the golden spirit was transferred to Limousin Bourdeux wine casks to breathe in the subtle tannins and rich fruit flavours from the oak wood.
Initially the palate is rich, sweet and smoky followed by a hint of Atlantic Sea salt.
The finish is a long deep infusion of juicy ripe berries and the trademark Bowmore smokiness

Caol Ila Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Until recently Caol Ila was the preserve of the Independent Bottler. Thankfully
is has now far more exposure.
It is one of the most beguiling of the peated Islay malts and this example is no exception.
Enjoy with a drop of water to bring out the exceptional smoke and oiliness.
Tasting Note:
Pale gold in colour.
Clean and smoky with perfumed vanilla. Slides around the palate releasing citrus and smoked ham.
Medium bodied, rich and mouth filling.
Lingering smoke and oil finish this beautifully complex dram.

Bowmore 9 year old Single Malt Whisky
Situated in the capital of Islay, Bowmore is a medium peated single malt which gives it a wider audience than some of it’s more heavily peat influenced neighbours.
It has always been among my very favourite malts due to the balance it exudes.
This young pup has plenty of character on display.
Tasting Note:
Pale gold in colour.
A gentle peat aroma is followed on the palate by a silky and nicely oily texture.
Sweet floral notes with soft smoke are rounded off with a clean long and fruity finish.

Ardbeg 30 year old 1975, 47.8% Platinum Selection Whisky

Islay Region
Distilled 1975 bottled 2005 at 47.8%
Platinum Selection Bottling by Douglas Laing
One of 274 .
Tasting Notes.
Its nose is characteristically aromatic, earthy, sweet, tarry and distinctively peated, a real islay smiler.
The Palate is attractively rounded and full, manifestly oceanic with expected peaty characteristics, still maintaining an attractive sweet profile.
This runs to a finish which is smoky, dryly spiced with more late tar qualities evident.

Ardbeg Uigeadail 54.2% Cask Strength Islay Malt Whisky

Nose
The undiluted nose is deep and rounded – chocolate caramels and barley sugar combine with dates, raisins and smooth sherry notes. Later, you find leather and linseed oil. With water the sweetness gives way to malted honeycomb, with flowering currants emerging through the smokey sweetness of a well fired fruit pudding
Taste
Sweet, chewy and oily with a silky mouth-feel, the flavour is initially sweet, revealing fruit cake and treacle. This is followed by smoked, barbecued or honey roast food with the slightest hint of olives.
Finish
Long, both sweet and dry with honey, treacle and a trace of lint.

Tasting Note.
At 25 years old this whisky embodies the richness, depth and sweetness of all Ardbegs.

(Ardbeg) Serendipity 12 year old 40% Scotch Malt Whisky
The unforeseen but fortuitous union of two great single malts.
(You’d be forgiven in thinking it was deliberate)
Note the lack of single in the title.
Supreme Blended Malt Scotch Whisky.
As we all know, mixing Ardbeg with anything other than water could be considered a mortal sin but the men who make it are – belive it or not – are mere mortals, mistakes can happen.
A recent such mix-up resulted in the creation of a supreme blended malt whisky made up of two parts of 1992 Glen Moray to eight parts of a very much older Ardbeg. At 40%, chill filtered and peaty but with a refreshing lightness, it was a happy accident. So they named it Serendipity (for surely it’s a pity to waste it).
Tasting Note
The predominant and robust peaty flavour of Ardbeg, the ultimate Islay Malt, is subtly softened by the lighter tones of the Glen Moray. At the lighter strength of 40% and chill-filtered it is a rare opportunity for Ardbeg lovers and the uninitiated to experience a lighter taste of Islay.

Bruichladdich Islay Malt Whisky Tasting Note
Islay region, Loch Indaal district.
A risqué development in the continuing adventures of the Laddie.
The Proactive second edition of Bruichladdich twenty..
After twenty years maturing in Bourbon barrels the laddie was coyly introduced to spicy Mourvedre wine casks from Rivesaltes on France’s Mediterranean coast.
It was a flirtation a holiday romance that was almost over before it began. The result of this dalliance is that the expected profound spirit shows the gentle nuances of alluring fruit flavours with just a hint of subtle spice aromas adding to the overall multi-layered experience and a flush to the cheeks of the laddie.
Presentation Tin.
