Dram of the day; The Balvenie Rum Cask Single Malt-Whisky

The Balvenie Distillery lies at the very heart of Scotch whisky distillation in Speyside, in the Scottish Highlands.

The 1890’s were boom years for the Scotch whisky industry and in early 1892 work began to convert an eighteenth century mansion, Balvenie New House, into a distillery. The basement was to become a bonded store for maturing whisky, the first storey a malt floor, whilst the upper two floors were to be used as grain lofts.  The building took fifteen months to complete and on 1st May 1893, the first distillation took place at the new distillery,

The Balvenie Single Malt Scotch Whisky extra matured in Caribbean Rum Casks.

From the distillery comes Cuban Selection characterised by toffee, vanilla, and a hint of fruit.

The delicate fresh taste of Caribbean rum enhances The Balvinnie's vanilla notes in the finishing ~ whilst adding spicy aromatic qualities to the whisky.

Tasting notes :-

Nose  : Rich, sweet and creamy toffee on the nose combines with fresh fruit notes.

Palate : Rounded with vanilla and sweet oak notes, with a fruity character that develops with time.

Finish : Soft and lingering.

Monkey Shoulder Blended Malt Scotch Whisky 40%

The unusual name comes from what would now be know as a repetitive strain injury. Before the malt houses became mechanicalised and the malted barley was turned by hand some malt men used to develop a temporary strain known locally as Monkey Shoulder,

Inspired by their craft William Grants have created Monkey Shoulder. Their first ever blended triple malt Scotch whisky, unlike traditional blends Monkey Shoulder uses just three of Speyside’s finest single malts Glenfiddich, Balvenie and Kinvinnie and no grain whisky resulting in a richer blended malt of exceptional smoothness.

Colour: Full (old) gold,

Nose: Initially sweet, flowery, light spice with soft leather. Becomes sweeter still with coconut.

With added water, there's chocolate, orange & more vanilla.

Palate: a good balance between citric, vanilla, spiciness & some soft, sultana-like fruits.

With a lovely melted chocolate tone on the finish.

For more information on the distilleries involved in the production please click the distillery names Glenfiddich, Balvenie and Kinvinnie.
