The English Whisky Co Bottling's

The English Whisky Co. was established  in 2005 by James and Andrew Nelstop, as one of the first and for the time being the only registered whisky distilling company in England.

Others are in planning stages one other failed and a Cornish Brewery produces a whisky in batches

Their objective is to produce excellent quality whisky that will be able to compete with some of the finest whiskies currently on the market. Aiming to use the very best local ingredients, giving a selection of unique and truly excellent whisky.

The distillery produced its first 'run' on 12th December 2006 and it was with much excitement and with an enormous sense of achievement that the first barrel of 'St. George's whisky' was filled and along with the rest of the run, was put away for 3 years to mature.

Norfolks warmer climate allows a more rapid maturation of the whisky.

I have collated the English Whisky Co bottlings so that it is easier to see what has been produced.

Oerbaek-bryggeri Isle of Fionia Danish Whisky

ISLE of FIONIA Single malt whiskey

It is not from the Scottish islands, but on the island of Fyn (Fionia) that the old Ørbæk Brewers have thrown themselves into the production of o
rganic whiskey, from one of the first micro-distillerys in Denmark.

Isle of Fionia is the name of the new Danish Whisky and refers to the original ancient name for the island of Funen.

At Ørbæk Brewers they have installed a modern hand forged copper still with a capacity of 1000 litres. The 100 year old brewery buildings is the setting
for the processing of malting, distilling and storing whiskey in oak barrels.

The distillery has a patented column still which burns some of the cleanest and fine spirits.

Award Wining Limited Edition Three Ships Conquers International Waters

The limited edition Three Ships 10-year old single malt Whisky recently returned home with a gold medal from the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles held in Luxembourg.

A total 7 386 wines and spirits from 49 producer countries competed before a hand-picked selection of some of the world’s foremost judges.

The whisky was matured for the full 10 years in American oak casks of varying ages with the older small wood contributing to the exceptional smoothness of this whisky while also imparting a slight sweetness.

It’s a full-bodied and well-rounded whisky with a hint of peat and estery notes that add a slightly sweet fragrance hinting of dried fruit and fudge.

With only 8 000 bottles launched in October last year, it is highly unlikely that you would still find a bottle in liquor outlets but if you are lucky enough to spot one, make sure it becomes part of your whisky collection.

The Three Ships range of whiskies is produced by master distiller Andy Watts at The James Sedgwick Distillery, situated in Wellington under the shadow of the Cape’s Drakenstein Mountains.

The distillery was established in 1886 and over the past two decades has undergone several upgrades transforming it into a state-of-the-art distillery.

The Three Ships fleet consists of Three Ships Select, Three Ships 5-year-old Premium Select,
Three Ships Bourbon Cask Finish and now the Three Ships 10-year-old Single Malt Whisky.

South African Whisky Distillery Best Brand Innovator in Whisky Magazines’ Icons of Whisky

The James Sedgwick Distillery, situated at the foothills of the Bain’s Kloof Pass in the Boland town of Wellington, has been named Best Brand Innovator in Whisky Magazines’ Icons of Whisky competition. The award is in recognition of the state-of-the-art facilities at the distillery as well as the innovative whiskies produced here.

The Icons have been established to acknowledge the people and the places behind the world’s best whiskies and an independent panel compiles a shortlist from the entries received for the various categories.  The winners are chosen by vote and this year, only a few votes separated the winners from the rest of the pack.

According to Andy Watts, manager and master distiller of The James Sedgwick Distillery, it is great to see South Africa now seriously competing against the best in the world.

“The award reflects the global nature of the whisky industry and today, people are taking note of countries such as ours, realising South Africa has the facilities and skills to produce exceptional whiskies.”

Watts is only the sixth manager in the distillery’s 125 year history. Under his watchful eye the production facilities were recently upgraded and a new tasting room was created. Watts, has since his appointment in 1991 as manager of the distillery, been instrumental in shaping a South African whisky platform. He has established many firsts for South Africa on the whisky front with a single malt and a 100% locally blended whisky for the Three Ships brand and more recently the first single grain whisky, Bain’s Cape Mountain Whisky.

The distillery is named after Captain James Sedgwick, who settled at the Cape as a purveyor of quality liquor, tobacco and cigars and in 1886 his company purchased the buildings which today house the distillery.

The award-winning whiskies produced include the Three Ships whisky range of Select, Premium Select 5-year old, Bourbon Cask Finish, the limited edition Three Ships 10-year old single malt and the 100% single grain Bain’s Cape Mountain Whisky.

Amrut Distilleries takes World title at Icons of Whisky

AMRUT DISTILLERIES’ success on the global stage continues, named a Distiller of the Year in the Icons of Whisky 2011 on 3 March in London.

Amrut was crowned Distiller of the Year in the Rest of the World category by the independent judges of the prestigious awards, organised by the Whisky Magazine.

The award was made to Amrut “for raising the profile of Indian whisky across the globe and its innovations in the production process”. The Rest of the World title meant the Bangalore distillery was also one of the four contenders for the Icons of Whisky Distiller of the Year title.

The Icons are designed to celebrate the people and places behind the great whiskies of the world.

Chairman of the judges, Whisky Mag editor, Rob Allanson, added: “This year, in some cases we have seen smaller companies punching well above their weight to top their bigger rivals in the polls. The results also reflect the global nature of the whisky world.”

Amrut’s International Sales Manager, Ashok Chokalingam, was presented the award at a glittering dinner at the Waldorf Hotel in London. “This is an honour indeed. Amrut Distilleries has achieved a great deal in terms in the past few years and it is really satisfying to be recognised on the world stage. We hope we will continue to delight whisky drinkers the world over with our malts. We also hope we will continue to excite malt drinkers with our innovative approach to distilling and maturation.”

This latest recognition for Amrut Distilleries comes hard on the heels of Amrut Fusion being named World Whisky of the Year at the Malt Advocate Whisky Awards in February 2011. In a new category created to recognise “the wonderful whiskies” being produced in countries like Japan, India, Sweden, England, outside the major distilling nations,

John Hansell, editor of Malt Advocate magazine, explained the choice of winner.

“India’s Amrut distillery changed the way many think of Indian whisky .... Amrut is making whisky, and it’s very good.”

Hansell continued: “Amrut finally began exporting their whisky to the US in 2010. We’ve tasted our way through the various expressions (peated, sherried, cask strength, etc.) and we enjoyed them all, but the one that really impressed us was Amrut Fusion.

Fusion shows balance, complexity, and surprising maturity for its age -these are the defining characteristics for what is the best Indian whisky we have ever tasted. Combining Indian malt and peated Scottish malt, this whisky shows a sweet side, but is never cloying, with rich caramel, vanilla custard, and fruit cocktail in light syrup, balanced by vibrant-almost floral- dried peat smoke, delicate white pepper, and a hint of tropical fruit. We look forward to more great whiskies from Amrut.”

Amrut Fusion has been won many fans across the world and was named third best whisky of the year in the 2010 edition of Jim Murray’s The Whisky Bible. Fusion and Amrut’s other innovative malts like Intermediate, Sherry Matured, and Kadhambam have won many other awards, including several from the Malt Maniacs.

Lark Distillery Hobart, Tasmania, Australia.

Established in 1992 the Lark Distillery was the first distillery to legally operate in Tasmania since 1839. The distillery was the vision of Bill Lark, who realised that everything needed for a world-class whisky production, was available locally in Tasmania - pure soft water, high quality barley, highland peat bogs and the perfect climate for maturation.

Bill Lark's epiphany of producing Tasmanian single malt whisky apparently came to him whilst on a trout fishing trip in the highlands of Tasmania. As Bill and his farther-in-law enjoyed a dram of single malt whisky, surrounded by barley fields and the gentle flowing of the Clyde River, Bill remarked, "I wonder why there isn’t anyone making malt whisky in Tasmania".

Amrut Cask strength Single Malt Indian Whisky 61.8% alc/vol

Colour: Golden Yellow

Nose : Classic house style with glorious bourbon notes fused with the richest of the barley statements; not entirely unlike caramelised biscuit in dunked coffee; oh, and a bit of a spicy attitude, too...

Taste : There we go with that unique bitter - sweet overture where the oaks and barley appear joined at the hip ; lovely soft oils and then a sharp jolt of blood orange citrus, which is removed by something more buttery and delicate.

Finish : Long, elegant with the most intricate of fades with the oaks showing various bourbon then buttery characteristics; there is a trace of dark sugar and cocoa to help it along its way.

Other Info : ”Certainly the best non-peated Indian single malt to hit the international market.61.9%”- Jim Murray Rated 92/100.

Penderyn Single Malt Welsh Whisky 46% abv Madeira Finished

(Well it is St Davids Day)
The Penderyn Distillery is found in the picturesque village of Penderyn in the southern reaches of the scenic splendor of the Brecon Beacons National Park. The area has spectacular mountain scenery, open moorland and valleys containing fast-flowing streams, rivers and waterfalls.

The famous and popular Scwyd-Yr-Eira waterfall is within walking distance of the distillery.  All distillation, maturation and (unusually) bottling are carried out on the company's premises; enabling close quality control to be applied to all stages of the process.

Penderyn Single Malt Welsh Whisky   46% abv Madeira Finished Tasting notes:

This whisky is ‘finished’ in Madeira casks to impart a generous flavour of subtle complexity and gentle moreishness.  The unique distillation process at Penderyn produces a single malt whisky that is supremely smooth, light in character, softly golden in colour and does not require chill filtering.

At a premium strength of 46% abv, Penderyn has an exceptionally balanced taste and the aroma is of cream, toffee and fleetingly of fresh new leather.  Then, as the initial sensations fade, the finishing notes of tropical fruits, raisins and vanilla emerge strongly and are long lasting.
