Murray McDavid Independent Bottler

Highland Park Gold Mission Series Scotch WhiskyMark Reynier, Simon Coughlin and Gordon Wright founded Murray McDavid in 1996.

The company is named after Mark Reynier's grand parents, Harriet Murray and Jock McDavid, Unlike other Independent bottlers, Murray McDavid hasn't a blenders tradition to follow, bottling only single malts instead of blends.

With Mark Reynier, third generation wine merchant, Murray McDavid has taken several aspects from the wine industry in the preparation of their bottlings, for example always tasting each individual cask, then creating a collection of several casks from the same distillation to create consistency and maximise complexity.

Some of these whiskies are selected for further refinement with a period of Additional Cask Evolution (ACE'd) on Islay in European Oak wine casks such as Chateau Lafite, Chateau Margaux, Chateau d'Yquem,

All bottlings are with Islay Spring water, bottled at the Bruichladdich distillery.  they never add any colouring, nor do they chill filter

The range is intentionally small, less than 10 bottlings at a time, selected from distilleries which produce great whiskies, rather than simply distilleries having a well known name.

Evan Williams Extra Aged Sour Mash 43%

Evan Williams, born a Welshman, settled in Virginia and moved to what would become Kentucky (at the time was Fincastle County of Virginia) in about 1780.

Evan Williams' extra aging gives it a richer, smoother Bourbon taste.

It was given a 90-rating by Wine Enthusiast Magazine who commented that Evan Williams has, "a deep vanilla nose...and the palate shows notes of oak, vanilla and dark berries."

Evan Williams' Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey Tasting Notes..

Nose: Slightly sharp and green with a touch of menthol.

Taste: A very sweet start with soft brown sugars and caramel. As the middle is reached there is a hint of spice and maltiness.

Finish: A gentle finale to a light, easy-going whiskey. Limited vanilla and a little oak sap add extra weight but the small grains, especially the malt, do hang on to the finish.

Comments: An easy number, this. A fresh, light weight throughout makes this one not for those looking for the intensity you might expect at 7 years but a gentle, sweet, untaxing journey with not a bump along the way."

Glenfarclas Single Malt Whisky 30 year old 43%. 70cl

Speyside region. Distillery Edition.

Glenfarclas Scotch Whisky tasting note..

Colour: Full rich dark gold.

Nose: Full complex aromas with fruit and full sherried malty tones.

Flavour: With Sherry, cognac, brandy, fruit, nuts, marzipan (and even icing), this is a wonderfully indulgent Christmas cake, in a glass!

Finish: A whisky you never want to end and it very nearly doesn’t. The finish is exquisite with a real taste of burnt chocolate at the back of your mouth.

Comment By George Grant: This was distilled in my grandfather’s time, so we have to thank him for the wonderful depth of the 30 Years Old. It is the casks he purchased that have made this so richly indulgent. This truly amazing whisky was named the Best Commercially Available Single Malt in Australia in 2003, and won Gold at the International Spirits Challenge in 2005. At the 2007 Malmo Whisky Fair Glenfarclas 30 Years Old won double Gold, and was named ‘Best Overall Whisky at the Fair’

Talisker Single Malt Scotch Whisky 57° NORTH

A classic, intense, vigorous Talisker with a unique strength of character. Which becomes deeper and more approachable when water is added. It’s like looking out to sea with a storm brewing…

Strength: 57% ABV
Appearance: Full gold.
Nose: Very clean and intense, with light smoke soon appearing. Creamy toffee, with pronounced fruit acidity. Hints of edible seaweed, heather blossom and a calming influence of vanilla that balances the crisp attack. Chalky and minty. In time, chocolate, then salt. The chocolate becomes slightly nuttier: like praline.

Water tempers the attack and brings out a slightly oily note. Initially there's a firework/struck match edge, then more seaweed, as if you’re at the high water mark on a sandy beach. Sweet yet salty, with a savoury sharpness.

Body: Medium.

Palate: Tart fruit, sweet to start, with smoke and tar abruptly exploding around the middle of the mouth. Sweet-centred, a little like liqueur chocolate, yet tempered by a savoury edge that stops things becoming too polite. Water deepens the effect and smoothes out the abrupt shift between sweet and smoke. Mouthfilling, silky and complex.

Finish: Oily. Fairly medicinal with a drying tartness. Tingling and peppery. Smoother with water.

Glenmorangie Maderia wood Finish Scotch Whisky

Glenmorangie Scotch Whisky Distilling Equipment

8 Swan necked stills (tallest in Scotland)
Matured principally in American oak bourbon barrels The Distillery was the first to introduce finishes other than sherry

This unique range of malt whiskies was initially matured in American oak casks for at least 10 years and then transferred into casks which had previously contained Madeira for a further period of maturation.

This range of Glenmorangie wood finishes has now been discontinued

Colour:- Bright amber, with a slight orange tinge.

Nose:- This is a complex aroma – fresh, but slightly linty; sweet, but with a burnt tangy trace – literally “madeirised”; a trace of wood shavings.

With a drop of water, fresh black pepper emerges and a strong trace of humbugs (more than just “toffee” and “mint”, but having those characteristics). Some citrus orange in particular, perhaps peaches and again the intriguing burnt characteristic, with some indefinable winey undertones. After a while in an open glass, deeper fruit and spice notes emerge, like Christmas cake.

Taste:- The flavour is “cool” to the palate, but spicy on the tongue; fresh and citrus; sweet as it passes, but with a firm dry finish. The winey flavours are slight and unidentifiable; not as sweet as sherry and with a tangy characteristic. Unless told, we doubt whether anyone would identify Madeira, but once told, the puzzle is solved.

Finish:- Sweet as it passes, but with a firm, dry finish.

Bushmills Irish Whiskey 1608 Anniversary Edition 46%,

To mark 400 years of distilling in and around Bushmills, or “The Rowte” as the area was known in 1608. The stillmen at Bushmills have created a whiskey that truly lives up to the occasion.

Bushmills 1608 is an incarnation of the very best of the distillery and the people of Bushmills. This whiskey is above all approachable, with a remarkable smoothness and depth of character; in the true Irish style it has plenty of personality with a gentle touch.

At the heart of the blend is Bushmills malt whiskey distilled with crystal malt, a special type of malted barley that delivers exceptional smoothness.

Its name comes from the Barleycorns crystallised appearance when gentle toasted before the distilling process. This enhances the natural sweetness of the malt, giving the whiskey a unique toffee like softness.
