Dram of the day; Kilchoman 100% Islay 2nd Edition 50% 70cl

The Kilchoman Distillery was founded in 2005 and was the first new distillery to be built on Islay for 120 years. This is a traditional farm distillery with a fair proportion of the barley grown and malted on the site. The distillery is one of the smallest distilleries in Scotland with a production capacity of less than 100,000 litres of spirit of year.

This is the second 100% Islay release from Kilchoman Distillery and has been produced from barley grown, malted, distilled, matured and bottled at the distillery.

The whisky is a vatting from  3 year old and 4 year old casks  (50% of each) in a combination of  bourbon (Fresh &Refill) barrels from Buffalo Trace distillery, Kentucky, USA and Olorosso sherry butts from Miguel Martin in Spain.


Tasting notes :-

The colour is a light golden hue, on the nose there are soft peaty aromas with a blend of citrus, lemon and pear drops spring to mind. The palate has initial sweetness followed by soft smoke and the again mixed fruits are present. With a long, clean and fresh finish this is a whisky to savour.

Appearance: Bright deep gold with a tawny centre.
Nose: Sweet aromatics of fudge and muscovado sugar. Fruit compote and glacier morello cherries provide added complexity. 
Palate: Rich dark and seductive. Remarkable flavours of stewed fruits and all-spice marry together with classical aged Oloroso and toasted walnut bread and chocolate orange.

Maritime Scotch Whisky

These maritime whiskies are harder to define they can give differing levels of fruit, malt,  oaky, spicy and peat and smoke but is the  Coastal, Salty, Sea Breeze notes that can be detected that sets them apart.

Gentle Medium Peated Whiskies

The main attributes to Gentle medium peated Whisky is the Fresh Peat Gentle Smoke Earthiness some can have Peppery, Dried Fruits Citric Fruits or and Sherry Influence

Sorting Out Bruichladdich Whisky Bottlings

Bruichladdich Distillery, on islay, is small independent company consisting of private individuals, founded by Mark Reynier, Gordon Wright and Simon Coughlin of Murray McDavid.,

Fiercely independent they are free to make whisky the way they like and feel they do not have to conform to creating a "Standard" aged bottling and any way who wants to wait 10 years before they have stock to sell. Since they bottle naturally, batches are smaller this contributes to the reasons why they cannot  standardise.

With the need to have a standard bottling removed there is greater freedom to experiment with styles of expressions and finishes this is met with great enthusiasm and creativity.

There are some who criticise this constant curiosity and look in bewilderment at the range of whiskies Bruichladdich release; however they are simply exploring the many opportunities and the capricious world of distilling and maturation combinations – of still, oak, cask and warehouse. And then, being warm-spirited and generous folk, they release them to the world to share this incredible journey they have embarked on – as they say, life is a journey, not a destination.

When new cask types, ages, and styles become available, a new edition is released to replace the previous. This means numerous batch names are used. as the Bruichladdich brand evolves.

In trying to sort out these many expressions I have consulted several books and websites and have come up with  4 current bottling categories containing 38 expressions Although several of these are now finished

Dram Of The Day:The Geordie Laddies 10yo Port Charlotte

This is a rewrite of yesterday's  blog post that I rightfully got a "Chuntering at" for infringing  Gordon_Homers Copyright,

I was  fed up. The ERYCC had put signs up that the A166 was closed (It is n't its a night closure) No Businesses open signs, No Warning, No support, resulting in one of the lowest passing trade days ever. After spending several hours on the phone to the Fools on the local council  They didn't even know where the A166 was. I needed to write about some whisky to pick me up. 

Now this Port Charlotte had been sold to us and had a great story attached so instead of my normal cautious self and seek permissions- conditions, I do send out 100s of emails with about a 2% reply rate, I thought Bu??er it  by the time I get permission the bottling will be gone and I will have missed another great whisky to write about.

"Publish and be dammed" Came to mind so I was lazy, a quick cut and past the photos are mine, Then social networking. unfortunately I forgot  @gordon_homer follows me on twitter. He was upset and rightfully pointed out my lifting of his work without permission and the implication that his whisky was being sold in shops, I have dully apologised for my errors. Its still a great whisky to talk about

The Geordie Laddies are as the name suggests from what I gather is a North East syndicate that purchased a "Port Charlotte" distillation from  Bruichladdich  on a cask offer introduced when the distillery re-opened in  2001. 

The initial purchase was by Gordon Homer for a "bloodtub" Then at a local BBQ the purchase of the bloodtub came up which lead to them deciding to purchase a barrel along with about 9 friends. This was completed with the filling in December 2001 into a fresh Bourbon cask.

John Rennie one of the warehouse men predicted that the cask would be "perfect at 10"  

Taken from a first fill Boubon cask at 64.4%  the colour can be described as a rich gold.

 At full strength there is the Islay smoke with peat, salt and spice on the nose. 

Again at full strength the palate has the milder Islay characteristics of peat but with the sweeter style of vanilla and subtle spice.

The finish is long with the Port Charlotte style peatiness.

On the Nose there is sweet cured bacon influences, with a delicate smoky nose. Some fruity notes emerge.

With Water Added there is  more pronounced smoke, with lighter influences of sweet cures, fresh with a hint of citrus fruits.

the palate is now Initially mouth warming, becoming creamy, with a lighter hint of smoke lingering in the background. Smooth and sweet

Port Charlotte Islay Single Malt Whisky has been produced at Bruichladdich Distillery by Master Distiller Jim McEwan in homage to the exceptional Single Malt produced in the village of Port Charlotte until 1929.

 Heavily peated and unmistakably Islay, this Cask Strength bottling of only 6000 bottles was the first ever distillery bottling release of this eagerly anticipated single malt.

Colour: sunshine on warm copper.

 Nose: like a thunderstorm, the aromas burst from the glass like some kind of hebrideam firecracker - exploding with peat, bracken, heather roots, turf, oak, charcoal, marine pitch and gusting sea squalls - it’s flying! -- the slipstream reveals sherry - mellow, rich and nutty; followed by bourbon - sweet vanilla and russian toffee. then you find yourself in the eye of the storm: and the fruity aromas drift in - green apples, gooseberry, honeyed limes then a brief respite from the returning storm, which as the spirit warms on the back of the palate, brings an infusion of all the elements that make this island’s whiskies so special.

Palate: all the aromas found on the nose are swept onto the palate with incredible peat-fire warmth, filling the heart with passion. it’s young whisky and old skills in absolute harmony; not for the faint-hearted.

LIMITED EDITION BUNNAHABHAIN 30-YEAR OLD RELEASED

Bunnahabhain 30 year old Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Whilst one of the most exciting decades in world history unfolded back in 1980, the Bunnahabhain Distillery on the Isle of Islay, off the west-coast of Scotland, gently prepared the casks for what today can be enjoyed as the Bunnahabhain 30-year old Islay single malt.

According to Brian Glass, spokesperson for Bunnahabhain,  there are only 357 bottles, each hand-numbered, available world-wide. . Quite uniquely this exceptionally rare whisky also bears the 1980 vintage year on the label, proudly acknowledging the whisky’s undisturbed maturation for 30 years at the Bunnahabhain distillery’s shore-side warehouse.

“This limited-edition single malt whisky is truly one of the finest examples of the craftsmanship and distilling traditions of the Bunnahabhain Distillery. It is a pity there are so few bottles available of this extraordinary whisky but then again, if it wasn’t the case, it wouldn’t have been such a rare find. This is the kind of whisky you keep, savour on special occasions and treat with the utmost love and admiration.”
The whisky is un-chillfiltered, with a natural cask strength of 45.4% alcohol by volume, and released in its most pure form, the way whisky would have been produced at the hands of Bunnahabhain’s distillers many years ago. According to master distiller Ian MacMillan by un-chillfiltering the whisky, nothing is taken away or added so whisky lovers can enjoy the whisky at its very best, giving them a better whisky experience. “The whisky retains its depth of flavour, allowing the gentle, subtle notes of the malt to come through, providing a purer taste, nose and appearance.”


Only a select few of the Bunnahabhain casks that reached the gracious age of 30 have been selected for this whisky. After careful, ongoing selection over the years, and much deliberation, MacMillan selected two ex-sherry hogshead casks which reflect the finest qualities and superior characteristics one would associate with a vintage whisky from Bunnahabhain.
MacMillan says the whisky holds a rich, aromatic nose with a sophisticated balance of oak, gingerbread, moist fruit cake, prunes, old leather, roasted nuts and a hint of sea air. “The palate opens up to produce a creamy, silky taste with sweet oak, liquorice and nutmeg intertwined with citrus, vanilla, eucalyptus and a hint of coconut. The finish is long and elegant with flavours of digestive biscuits, soft vanilla, a tinge of ginger and sea salt coating your mouth.”

To celebrate its release, the whisky comes beautifully packaged in a natural un-dyed leather case and includes a pewter Quaich, a historic drinking vessel that is one of the most symbolic elements portraying friendship, sharing and trust. A small leather tag, embossed with the Bunnahabhain seafarer on the label and the bottle number, is attached to the handle of the case. The set also includes a small glass tube containing a parchment scroll commemorating the release of this limited-release whisky.

Bunnahabhain, known for its single malts with a gentle taste profile due to the use of unpeated barley, is crafted by MacMillan, a master blender and distiller with over 40 years’ experience. The distillery produces a 12-, 18- and 25-year old..

Bruichladdich Distillery is a small, private company, free to make whisky the way they like and do not have to conform.

By industry levels the bottlings are small; since they bottle naturally, they cannot seek to standardise. When new cask types, ages, and styles become available, a new edition is released to replace the previous.

Islay's Farm Distillery

Kilchoman (pronounced kilhoman) is a farm scale distillery and the first to be built on Islay for 124 years.

An extraordinarily stylish and complex double-matured expression of Caol Ila; the Moscatel cask wood not over-evident; richly flavoured yet also drying and finely balanced.

Appearance: Clear gold

Nose: Wonderfully concentrated pure, clean Caol Ila – peaty and medicinal, with rich fruit, spicy and fragrant. With water, the fragrant smokiness comes singing through.

Body: Medium.

Palate: Sweetness and maltiness strike first, then are quickly overwhelmed by peat smoke and intense, clean, crisp flavours. Caol Ila’s signature smoky bonfires are here, and build to quite a size. Overall, drying, in a beautifully balanced, complex, elegant development with cinnamon spice.

Laphroaig Single Malt Whisky 10 year old 40%

Laphroaig Scotch Whisky.

Islay region. South shore district.

Lying just west of Lagavulin on the south shore. Alex & Donald Johnston started the Laphroaig distillery in 1815.

During 1836 the distillery became under the sole ownership of Donald Johnston. Unfortunately Donald  died after tumbling into a vat of part-processed whisky in 1847  (what a way to go)
His son Dugald was too young to take over so the distillery was temporarily leased to Walter Graham

Port Ellen Single Malt Whisky Tasting notes:-

The nose opens with a clean maritime style plus spices and honey carrying a bandage and medicinal quality. Initial saltiness on the palate runs to interestingly dry bonfire ashes.

The finish is long reminiscent of "Arbroath Smokies" with soft chewed leather, tar and creosote lingering on. (J)
